Ever since last January's devastating earthquake in Haiti, Life for Relief and Development has worked diligently to help survivors through its Haiti Relief Campaign. Thanks to its donors and partners, Life has distributed nearly $3 million in emergency aid and reconstruction assistance across the country. One of Life's biggest accomplishments has been the renovation of five mosques in and around the capital of Port au Prince. Life staff worked closely with the Haitian-Muslim community in order to assess their specific needs and create a plan that would not restore their mosques, but would also improve them over their prior condition. Masjid Al Fatiha in Delmas 18, which is the oldest mosque in Haiti, was completely renovated and equipped with new carpet for the prayer hall, plumbing for the wudu area, cabinets for the Qurans, speakers for the minaret, and a new water filtration system. The imam's residence next to the mosque was also renovated. Similar renovations took place at Masjid Allahu Akbar, Masjid Al Tawheed, and Masjid Yassin. A fifth mosque, Masjid Al Qadri, is scheduled to be rebuilt by Life after it was determined to be structurally unsafe for use. This project was funded in part by the Al-Rahma Charity, which is based in Ra's Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, and Life donors. Despite these accomplishments, there is much that still needs to be done, and Life remains committed to the rebuilding process in Haiti, which the government estimates will cost at least $11 billion.
