La presencia árabe en América Latina y su aportación literaria en Brasil, Cuba y Colombia

ABSTRACT: The Arab presence in Latin America dates back to the arrival of the Spaniards and it is from the end of the 19th century onwards that the large community of Arab origin, mainly composed of Syrians, Lebanese and Palestinians, arrived.

In this context, Latin America experienced different waves of Arab migration from the Middle East. The first was between 1870 and 1900, due to Turkish domination that led many Arabs to seek other more welcoming lands; the second wave was between 1900 and 1914 because of the British and French occupation of the Middle East, and also as a consequence of the First World War; and finally, the third wave occurred as a result of the occupation of Palestine in 1948 and from 1974 onwards with the civil war in Lebanon.

ABSTRACTO: La presencia árabe en América Latina se remonta a la llegada de los españoles y es a partir de finales del siglo xix cuando desembarca la numerosa comunidad de origen árabe, mayoritariamente compuesta por sirios, libaneses y palestinos.

En este contexto, América Latina tuvo diferentes oleadas migratorias árabes procedentes de Oriente Medio. La primera fue entre 1870 y 1900, debido a la do- minación turca que llevó a muchos árabes a buscar otras tierras más acogedoras; la segunda oleada fue entre 1900 y 1914 a causa de la ocupación inglesa y francesa en Oriente Medio, y también como consecuencia de la Primera Guerra Mundial; y por último, la tercera oleada se produjo a raíz de la ocupación de Palestina en 1948 y a partir de 1974 con la guerra civil en el Líbano.
