The implantation and growth of Islam in Brazil - A implantação e o crescimento do islã no Brasil

This article attempts to understand the numerical growth of Islam in Brazil through a historical review of its introduction and some of its practices and beliefs. For this purpose, we divide the introduction of Islam in Brazil in three phases: slavery, immigration, and conversion. We discuss how non-Muslims receive the Islamic message in each phase, making a distinction between association (the participation in a religious movement wi- thout lifestyle changes) (MOSSIÈRE, 2007, p. 9) and conversion (a change of worldview and value systems with an awareness that the old ways were wrong, and the new one is right) (NOCK, 1933, p. 6-7).
