Contents About the architecture of Suriname there are already some standard works. They give a comprehensive picture of what can be seen in the field of architecture and building culture. This book zooms in on a single building: the main mosque of the Surinamese Islamic Association (S.I.V.) on Keizerstraat in Paramaribo. Basharat Ahmadali, Akbaal Ghafoerkhan and George Dew Soerjoesing drafted an initial text. They were also directly involved in the construction of the mosque at the time (1973-1984) and had a lot of first-hand information. Moreover, they had a large collection of visual material and construction drawings. In consultation with the publisher, the decision was then made to embed the construction history of the mosque in a much broader historical, social, cultural and religious context. Thus, key concepts from Islam were also brought into the spotlight, as well as the history of the origin of the building type 'mosque'. Thorough attention was also paid to the history of the Surinamese Islamic Association. In 1929 this association was founded as a Hindu Muslim organization. From the Pakistani city of Lahore, the S.I.V. received much support. Gradually it evolved from an orthodox Sunni to a reformist Ahmadiyya organization.
